Weight Loss Journey: Fruit-tastic!

Choose an apple instead of chips. You're not actually craving the food but the texture and taste.

It's been a while since I've posted an update on my journey to losing weight, so I thought this week would be the perfect time, especially since Easter is next weekend.

So how am I doing? I bounced back from my weight gain and hit the ground running. I decided that I wasn't going to let a little weight gain set me back, so I charged full steam ahead and continued on working my way back up the weight loss ladder. While I have made some choices I'm not particularly proud of, I am more proud of myself that I was able to lose the weight I had gained along with a few more pounds.

When I start feeling "snacky", I stopped snacking on sweets, salty stuff, and even those so-called health bars. (I found out that a lot of the mass-produced health bars were not in fact as healthy as I thought.) So I decided to find a much better alternative to all those sweet and salty snacks - fruit. We started keeping bananas, oranges, and apples in the house and I have to say that I love the new snacks! I usually have a banana early afternoon, an apple late afternoon, and an orange in the early evening. When I'm not feeling hungry for normal food, I'll grab a banana instead.

Weight loss snack tip: If you're craving crackers, chips, or crispy fries, choose an apple instead. You're not actually craving the food - you're craving the texture and taste. Apples provide the texture and taste but are much more healthier and will fill you up quicker. You won't feel like snacking an hour later.

Yes - I think I will continue making bananas, oranges, and apples as my go-to snack... unless chocolate is involved.

4 Books Every Single Woman Should Read

This post may contain affiliate links.

When you're single for a while, it can kind of be discouraging. Even if it's just after a break-up, being single can sometimes be hard. Every now and then, we need something to make us feeling good about being single, no matter how old we are.

These 4 books have shook me to the core and shook me again. They have given me a fresher look at my life and what I want out of it.

1. The Single Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass by Mandy Hale
This book is a great testament that you don't have to feel bad about being single - you can celebrate it! With plenty of wisdom, humor, and thought-provoking ideas. This book actually helped me embrace my singleness and the idea that I don't need to settle just because everyone else is in a relationship or getting married.

2. Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman: Dispelling 10 Common Myths by Allison K. Flexer
Have you ever thought "God has forgotten about me." because you've been single for a while? I know I have and more often than I'd like to mention. Truth, Lies, and the Single Woman (written in a Christian view) helps you realize that God hasn't forgotten you but instead put on this path for a specific reason. When reading this, I felt like the author knew exactly what I was going through and feeling. NOTE: This is a Christian book so it may not be for all singles.

3. Bossypants by Tina Fey
I absolutely loved Bossypants! Tina Fey, who is one of my favorite comediennes, shows us her true funny self in her autobiography. Aside from being extremely funny, she is a strong woman in the prime of her lifetime! While this book won't help you "celebrate being single", it's great to have a few books about strong women when you are feeling low. (Not to mention that it's just a wonderful book!)

4. I've Never Been to Vegas, but My Luggage Has: Mishaps and Miracles on the Road to Happily Ever After by Mandy Hale
Yes, it's another book by Ms. Hale, but this time, this is a book every woman should read! It's full of funny anecdotes, pieces of truth, and experiences that most women can relate to. I found myself smiling, laughing, or nodding through out the entire book. Rarely do I ever come across a book I can almost completely relate to - and this one was it!

Whether you get anything out of the books or not, they are wonderful reads and a great way to celebrate being a strong independent single woman without the need to wallow in self-pity.

What books would you add to the list?

Weather & Anxiety - Calm During the Storm

You may be able to stay calm during bad weather with these helpful tips!
When you think of anxiety, you never hear about the attacks that happen during severe weather. It's normal for children to get scared, but as you get older, it becomes more taboo for an adult to be afraid of the weather.

But it is possible for someone who suffers from anxiety to have an attack during severe weather. Now that Texas will be entering our stormy season soon, I keep an extra eye on Twin just in case we do have severe weather. But over the past year or so, we have come up with ways to keep her calm on the stormiest of nights.
  •  It's okay to keep an eye on weather reports. In a lot of cases, it's absolutely necessary! But do not become obsessed with keeping up with reports of areas where you do not live/work. Just because it happened there doesn't mean it will happen where you are. Stay vigilant, but not fixated on it.
  • Keep yourself busy with a hobby - including reading or crafting. It keeps your mind busy and away from worrying constantly about the weather.
  • Take this time to work on meditation. It will help calm your nerves, even if it's just a little bit.
  • If there is going to be a storm that day that may be severe, it sometimes helps to prepare by gathering candles/flashlights, a weather radio, and blankets. It may keep your mind at ease.
  • Sometimes, we find that it's helpful to look out the window often to see what the weather is doing. Make sure that if you do watch the weather through the window a lot, that you are doing it safely and stay away from windows when the wind is really bad.
  • If you have children, try to stay as calm as you possible can. When kids see their parents anxious and nervous, it makes them more nervous. This is also a great opportunity to teach your children about the weather, and how everything happens.
We always hear about children having anxiety during thunderstorms, but seldom do we hear about adults shaving what I call "weather anxiety". If you or know someone who suffers from "weather anxiety", hopefully these tips will help you stay calm during bad weather.

Soda Bottle Mini Greenhouse Tutorial

It's springtime and that means that it's time to start planting those seeds! The only problem with early spring is that there is still the chance of one last cool front, and you're new seedlings are at mercy of the weather. A great way to protect those little plants (and keep them growing strong) is by starting your little indoor green house using nothing but plastic soda bottles!

What You'll Need

1 1-liter soda bottle (I used a Dr Pepper bottle.)
Scissors
Seeds
Water
Soil

What To Do
Make sure the bottles are clean!
1. Remove the caps. Cut both bottles in half.
2. Fill the bottom half of the 1-liter bottle with 1/2" of water.
3. Put the 1-liter spout top upside into into the 1-liter bottle bottom with the spout facing down towards the water.
You can't see it, but there is water on the bottom.

4. Fill with soil. It's okay if soil gets into the water. If you want to avoid that, you can put a small paper towel in the spout -- but make sure that water can still drain through the paper towel.
5. Place 2-3 seeds into the soil, following seed directions.
Seeds are in place and it's ready for labeling!

6. Lightly wet soil, but not soaking wet.
8. Set in a sunny warm place like a windowsill.

Chalk labels are a great way to label so you can reuse your greenhouse! By the way, it says Garlic Chives. I ran out of room. Haha!
Be sure to label your greenhouses with the seed name & the date you planted it! (Example: Chinese Lanterns 3/25)

Not sure how to keep your little plants growing? Be sure to water when the soil is dry. Don't over-water or under-water... this is a surefire way to kill them. (Trust me on this!) A goof-proof way to water your greenhouse plant is to use a spray bottle and spray the water onto the soil.

This is also a great way to get kids interested into plants and teach about how greenhouses work!

You can also go a step further and cut a 2-liter bottle in half, take the spout top and place it over your greenhouse.

Get beautifully soft skin w/ #Dial Miracle Oil

I was NOT compensated for this review. I received a FREE product to facilitate this review. All thoughts & opinions are my own. Your experience may differ.

Dial Miracle Oil gives you that squeaky clean feeling with really soft skin! This new body wash is formulated with Micro Oil Technology for a luxurious, clean-rinsing lather that leaves the skin feeling clean, soft, and smooth.

Caring oils are a major trend in hair care and cosmetics. Infused with Marula oil, Dial Miracle Oil body wash restores your skin and makes it ultra smooth while moisturizing.

So does Dial Miracle Oil live up to its name? You betcha it does! Since winter gives me horribly dry skin, I needed a body wash that would restore my skin back to it's supple softness. Not only does it smell good, it lathers up really nicely. You know how some body washes have a weak lather, making you wonder if they're actually working at all? Well, you don't have to wonder with Dial Miracle Oil! The lather is rich and full. It rinses off clean and easily, so you don't have to keep running water over the same area just to get the soap off.

Was my skin soft again? Not at first. I mean, the first layer of my skin was a little soft, but not what you'd expect. After a few more uses, I noticed that my skin was no longer flaky and it was returning to it's normal health of being super smooth. Now that winter is on its way out, I think I can continue to use Dial Miracle Oil to retain my skin's creamy feeling.

So if you want to keep your skin healthy and velvety, you might want to try the new Dial Miracle Oil - you won't regret it! (I promise!)

5 Apps Every Blogger Should Have

Blogging on-the-go is now the norm for most bloggers. Some apps (like Instagram) allow us to post pictures of our vacations to our readers within an instant. Some apps help us type out ideas before we forget them. There are even apps that let us edit pictures with the swipe of a finger. But what are the best apps for a blogger to have?

1. An app for your blogging platform
Whether you use Wordpress or Blogger, having an app for your platform allows you to post, approve comments, or edit no matter where you are in the world. Just make sure that your device supports the app.

Wordpress for iPhones/iPads
Blogger for iPhones/iPads
Wordpress for android
Blogger for android

2. Social media apps
This includes Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. I personally have Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest on my android tablet. I haven't gotten around to Twitter, but I eventually will.

Since most people already have these, the links aren't needed. But they can be found on either iTunes or Google Play (depending on your device).

3. A photo editing app
Some smartphones or tablets don't have a great editing tool already installed, so you have to download one. Find an editing app that suits your needs. Adobe Photoshop Express is popular, but Photo Editor by Aviary is another great app! (The link for Photo Editor by Aviary goes to Google Play.)

4. Google Analytics
As a blogger, keeping up with Google Analytics is a must! But if you're not going to be near a computer for some time, you might want to consider downloading the Google Analytics app. You can pretty much see everything on there that you normally would.

Google Analytics for android
Google Analytics for iPhones/iPads

5. Evernote or Google Drive
You need a place to upload or keep your ideas and pictures handy. Some android tablets come with Evernote already installed, which makes it hard to uninstall it if you decide to use Google Drive.

For android users, you can search for your apps in Google Play. iPhone/iPad users can search for apps in the iTunes store. Be sure to keep an eye on the price on the app - some of them may not be free - especially the photo editing apps!

Happy #StPatricksDay!

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again. May Gold hold you in the palm of His hand.

Today is St. Patrick's Day and instead of focusing on green food or beer, I am celebrating my Irish heritage with good Irish music and The Quiet Man. (Okay, and maybe a peek at The Leprechaun later.)

#kanvaslabels chalk label ideas!

I was NOT compensated for this review. I received a free product to facilitate this review. All thoughts & opinions are my own. Your experience may differ.

We've seen chalk labels every where, but mostly on glass canisters, where you can clearly see what is inside.

But did you know that Kanvas Labels chalk labels are one of the best brands, and can be used practically anywhere?  Hard to believe, I know! They are reusable, since you just use chalk to write what you need and erase when it's time to start again. They are water-proof for accidents, and provide endless possibilities.

We got the chance to try them out, and we came up with some pretty cool ideas! (Though we didn't do all of them, we just came up with some of these great ideas.)
  • Recycled canisters that aren't clear, but you need to know what's inside!
  • On planters, especially herbs/small plants.
  • DIY chalkboard calendars.
  • Labels for notebooks or storage bins.
  • Desk accessories, like the in/out trays.
  • Boxes you've hid for holiday gifts (like Mother's Day, Christmas, birthdays, etc.)
  • Personalizing family members' stuff.

#kanvaslabels

So what exactly did we use ours for? Seedling starting planters, mostly! Did the labels do the job? Absolutely! The smooth surface was easy to write on, and easy to erase. They come in packs of 48 (and 4 different styles) so we will never run out of ideas, especially since they can be reused.

Organization isn't easy for some people (like me), but Kanvas Labels chalk labels can make it seem like it is! You can purchase them on Amazon for only $7.99 - a steal!

Happy Pi Day!

Today is officially Pi Day. It's the one day each year where us geeks can celebrate 3.14 with pie! (Okay, so not really but pie sounds really good right now.)

You're probably wondering what the big deal about Pi Day is about, right? This year marks a special occasion for Pi Day - it is also Pi Day of the Century with the date being 3.1415. That only comes once in a century, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! It's a great way for kids (and adults) to learn more about math, and how Pi is used every day.

Here's a little fun Pi (yet totally educational) video!

Prefer to celebrate with pie? Design Sponge has 15 pie recipes for you to try!

A little trivia for you: Did you know that Albert Einstein was born on March 14th?

Madonna is back with #RebelHeart! #O2O

I participated in the Madonna Rebel Heart album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided an album to review but all opinions are my own.

Her 13th studio album, Madonna's Rebel Heart features the iconic star with powerful beats and melodies that is meant to your butt moving! “Rebel Heart explores two very distinct sides of my personality, the rebellious renegade side of me and the romantic side of me” commented Madonna recently in Billboard.

Rebel Heart also features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Nas, Chance the Rapper, and Mike Tyson.

Rebel Heart is expected to be released on March 10th. You can order the album on iTunes! (As with any Madonna album, it does contain explicit lyrics.)

Be sure to follow Madonna on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube!

So what did I think of Rebel Heart? Well, regardless of what you think about Madonna, she can still put out powerful beats that make you want to dance and she can still sing her heart out. Personally, I thought the album was... okay. She is still trying to stay relevant by featuring collabs with Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and Mike Tyson (who has a cartoon on Adult Swim - I am not kidding!). But with tracks like "Bitch, I'm Madonna" feat. Minaj, and Devil Pray, it made it hard to like this album at first.

Once I let my prejudices fall past the songs I really didn't care, I really found some songs that I could play over and over. The haunting melody of Ghosttown is pretty darn great, and Inside Out is classic Madonna! How did the duet with Chance the Rapper and Mike Tyson go? It is a pretty decent track called Iconic. I actually liked it - more than I thought I would!

This album was pretty good! Her voice is still super strong, and she has no problem pushing the envelope (as you can tell by the lyrics in most of the songs). Some songs are current to today's music and some where outright classic Madonna style. I'd definitely listen to it again!

On a scale from 1 (being pretty horrible) to 10 (being the best thing since chocolate-covered bacon), I'd give it an 8. I didn't care for a few songs, but some I thoroughly enjoyed!

Rescue your nail polish!

Tips to keep your nail polish fresh!
photo credit: sh5 mauve via photopin (license)

I don't know about you, but I love nail polish. I buy a new bottle at least every 3 months. I haven't counted lately, but I might have at least 10 bottles of nail polish. Like I said, I love nail polish. I also love tips that will help me keep my nail polish - and my bottles - looking good!

Nail polish too thick?

$9.99
ORLY has a great thinner, but it can be quite expensive.

One way you can thin out thick nail polish is to use nail polish thinner. Now, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I guess it really depends on what brand you get. I don't use thinner because I really don't come across thick nail polish unless the polish is more than 3 years old.

I sometimes use a drop of non-acetone nail polish remover. Now, I'm not saying to do this -- it might not work for you. But a drop in a solid color polish helps thin it out just enough for me to use it. If you do try this, I suggest using it on an old polish (that rarely gets used) and NEVER use it on shimmer/glitter/gel/hologram polishes. The remover will change almost everything about it.

Nail polish too thin?
Leave the lid off for 10-15 minutes, stirring the polish ever 2 minutes. Then roll the bottle between your hands.
I recently came upon a really thin nail polish but in all honesty, it was a super cheap polish and you apparently get what you pay for. Remember when you were in elementary school and you got to use water colors? Remember how watery the paint would get? It was like trying to put that on my nails.

One way to thicken really thin nail polish is to keep the lid off for 10-15 minutes, stirring about every 2 minutes. Close the bottle, and roll between your hands. That should help thicken it.

Is your bottle sticky or caked with polish?

Clean your bottles and applicators using nail polish remover!
I have this habit of getting the tops of the bottle caked on with nail polish. To clean your bottle, take the lid off. Dip a cotton ball or cotton fabric in non-acetone remover, and clean the top of the bottle. Since the top had polish, I'm sure your lid is looking a lot like your bottle. Drop your lid/applicator in remover for at least 5 minutes then use a cotton ball or something similar to wipe the inside of the lid and brush. To recondition the brush, swish it around in lukewarm water and towel dry. Air drying will dry out your brush!

Lid stuck on the bottle?

Try using a rubber band or hot water!
There is nothing more annoying than wanting to use a color only to find that you can't get the lid off. I have actually thrown away favorite colors because I couldn't get the lid unstuck! Luckily, I learned a few tricks on getting that pesky stuck lid off.

You can either drop the bottle into a cup filled with hot water for a few minutes. If it doesn't work, repeat until it does. Make sure that You can also wrap a rubber band (the thicker the better) around the lid, and try to create some traction.

Another idea, but one that is really off-the-wall, is to use one of those rubber jar gripper thingies. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Remember - trial and error! What works for you might not work for some and what works for some might not work for you!

Dear Younger Me

I recently saw a meme on Facebook that asked, "What would you tell your younger self?". It prompted a lot of thought, and I think I have come up with 6 things that I would tell my younger self if time travel were possible:

  1. No matter what anyone else thinks or feels, always love yourself. It's all you need.
  2. Stop comparing yourself to everyone, including family. You are yourself and should stay that way.
  3. Never let go of your dreams otherwise you'll spend your life regretting it.
  4. Take care of yourself physically and spiritually.
  5. Be careful who you fall in love with. They'll say quick words and before you know it, you're wishing you would have waited.
  6. Be best friends with your sister for as long as you can. She will be your rock.

If you could tell your younger self 6 things, what would they be?

Spinach & Avocado Turkey Sandwich with #HillshireNaturals {Recipe}

#spon: I'm required to disclose a relationship between our site and Hillshire. This could include Hillshire providing us w/content, product, access or other forms of payment.

This year, I vowed I would start eating healthier, and so far, I've done okay. The only problem is that I like sandwiches, especially if they involve cheese and and turkey lunch meat. But general turkey lunch meat has so much sodium and other stuff that really isn't good for me.

Thanks to Hillshire Farms Naturals, I can now have sandwiches and have my turkey lunch meat, too! Hillshire Farm Naturals™ lunchmeats are crafted to be both 100% natural and 100% delicious. The lunchmeats are slow roasted in their own juices and have no artificial ingredients or preservatives. Also, there are no added nitrates or nitrites, which makes it healthier for those who can't live without their lunchmeat.

Like I said, I prefer turkey lunch meat, since I've never really been a ham fan so I decided to try Hillshire Farms Naturals Slow Roasted Turkey Breast and Hillshire Farms Naturals Hardwood Smoked Turkey Breast. How did they taste?

When you eat regular lunchmeat, a lot of it tastes really salty. That's not the case with Hillshire Farms Naturals! I could barely taste the salt (if there was any), which is always a plus in my book. How was the turkey? Delicious! It actually tasted like turkey, and reminded me of the leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches we would always have. The meat itself didn't taste artificial at all, and had a healthy mouth feel to it. I'm not sure if I can go back to regular lunchmeat anymore!

(Be sure to follow Hillshire Farms on Facebook and Twitter for more deliciousness!)

Since it's been a while since we've done a food recipe (Drink recipes don't count!), I thought I would use the Hillshire Farms Naturals Slow Roasted Turkey Breast in a sandwich recipe!

Spinach & Avocado Turkey Sandwich

Prep time: 5-10 mins.
Total time: 5-10 mins.

Ingredients
  • 2 slice rye bread (or whole wheat, depending on what you prefer)
  • 2 slices Hillshire Farms Naturals Slow Roasted Turkey Breast
  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1/2 handful Spinach leaves (We used the bagged spinach but you can use fresh spinach.)
  • Sliced red onion to taste
  • lemon juice
Directions
  1. Remove avocado flesh from avocado half. Spread on one side on each slice of rye bread.
  2. Place spinach on top of avocado.
  3. Slice a little bit of red onion (to taste) and place on top of spinach.
  4. Take 2 slices of Hillshire Farms Naturals Slow Roasted Turkey Breast and put it on top of onion.
  5. Drizzle with a little bit of lemon juice.
  6. Close sandwich with remaining slice of bread, avocado facing down.
  7. Enjoy!
What's your favorite way to make a wonderfully delicious turkey sandwich?

Taste the creaminess of #Jarlsberg!

I absolutely love cheese - especially when it comes to gourmet and unique cheeses. In fact, I didn't have goat cheese until Christmas Eve when someone brought it to my grandmother's house but I can see why it's popular!

Jarlsberg® is a mild, semi-soft, and part skim cheese made from cow's milk. Jarlsberg® mild has the same nutty flavor as regular Jarlsberg® but with 50% less fat and 30% fewer calories than Swiss cheese, making it the perfect topping to any sandwich or great for healthy snacking.

Believe it or not, in the 1820s, Swiss master cheese makers (which I didn't even know existed) visited Norway's Jarlsberg and Laurvig County and locals taught these cheese makers their closely guarded secrets to making amazing Swiss cheese. Unfortunately, the locally produced Swiss cheese eventually disappeared over time, but the legend of the memorable taste lived on.

In the 1950s, a group of students in Norway decided to explore these legends, and as they say, the rest is history. The Jarlsberg® cheese was born from the ashes, with the same great taste as was told through legend.

If you're interested in giving Jarlsberg® cheese a taste, you can always try your hand at their many recipes - some which seem impossibly simple!

Jarlsberg® cheese comes in flavors of Original, Lite, Special Reserve, or Smoked. Sizes and availability depends on region.

Be sure to follow Jarlsberg® on Facebook!

BUY
Jarlsberg may or may not be available in your area or region. Please contact your stores to see if they carry it. (Note: H-E-B Plus! does carry Jarlsberg cheese at most of their cheese counters. My local H-E-B did NOT offer packaged Jarlsberg. It had be sliced at the counter from one of those big Swiss cheese reels.) Prices may vary.

WHAT I THOUGHT

Like I said, I love cheese but what I didn't tell you is that I love authentic Swiss cheese. So how does Jarlsberg stack up against other brands?

Before we begin, I must warn you that I only got to try Jarlsberg  Lite, as it was the only kind H-E-B offered.

Okay. Now that's out of the way, I must say that I am impressed! I rarely say that things taste amazing, but Jarlsberg Lite tasted amazing! It had a lot of bite to it, and the taste was tarty and with a little bit of a nutty overtone. You can really taste the tartness of it when you just have the cheese by itself.

The first time I melted it, I melted it on a piece of wheat bread and it was pretty darn good! It doesn't get gooey and all melty like high fat cheeses, but it didn't loose the nutty taste. The tart taste pretty much went away, but that's okay - I still loved it!

I love Swiss cheese, but I think I love Jarlsberg even more.

What Leonard Nimoy Did for #womenslives

I know that the Across Women's Live initiative is meant to celebrate women and what they have done for society, but it is possible for a man to help celebrate women's lives as well!

Did you know that Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) was actually for equal rights for women and wanted women to be confident with their bodies?

The Full Body Project, was a photography book filled with provocative (and often nude) pictures was to applaud the "everyday woman" -- though some would argue that Nimoy's use of the models is anything but the "everyday woman". Even if your opinions differ from Nimoy's, you have to agree that celebrate women and their shapes is something that makes every woman feel good.

Equal rights for men and women often cause debates that are out of this world. Some men - and some women - don't want equal rights because it would strip away the thought that the husband should support the wife and have a job. Even if the wife had a job, she shouldn't be paid equal, once again brandishing the idea of the husband being the breadwinner. But because Nimoy's co-star Nichelle Nichols was being considerably less than her male co-stars, Nimoy fought for Nichols to get paid the same amount as her co-stars. He eventually became known as the "conscience of Star Trek".

As we celebrate women who do amazing things, we can also celebrate the fact that there are men out there who want women to have equal rights as well, and that's a beautiful thing.
