Captive
Starring actor David Oyelowo (known for his role as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the film "Selma") and actress Kate Mara (known for her role as Beth Johanssen in the film "The Martian"), Captive is based on a miraculous story about the power of faith. It is a drama about the spiritual collision of two lost souls, Brian Nichols, on the run from police and desperate to make contact with his newborn son, takes recently widowed mother Ashley Smith hostage in her own apartment. Fearing for her life and desperately hoping to see her daughter again, she turns to Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life for guidance. Ashley and her captor face a crossroads where they discover hope and light in the midst of despair.

WHAT WE THOUGHT
(This may contain spoilers.)
Let me just say that before watching this movie, I had never heard of David Oyelowo or Kate Mara, so I went into the movie without any kind of bias.

The movie started slow. Within 10 minutes of the movie starting (minus the anti-tobacco ad that precedes it the movie), I was hoping it would get better. The vantage points flip flop from Brian Nichols to Ashley Smith, and back again. It was getting hard to keep up with the idea of what the producers or director was going for.

It does get better, but it takes a while to get there. Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) is a drug addict that had lost her daughter to drugs, and after a recovery meeting, she is given a book - Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life. She initially has no desire to read it, but it somehow keeps showing up in her life. Brian Nichols is a criminal who escapes and kills people in an effort to see his newborn son. To avoid being caught, he notices Ashley Smith walking to her to car one night, and holds her captive in her own apartment. Ashley Smith tries to form a bond with Nichols, but no one is sure why. She reads The Purpose Driven Life to him, and he seems to crumble.

The faith-based movie itself was okay. I liked the message it had, and it does have semi-Christian story to it. In fact, I may have to check out The Purpose Drive Life just because the movie seems to be centered around it.

If I had to rate it out 10, I'd give it a 7.
