For the past few years, our family has been using mostly herbal remedies instead of over-the-counter medicines. We have found that they are more gentle on our systems and work just a little better- not to mention cheaper! So I thought I would share some of our best finds!
Upset Stomach- We usually use Ginger Root for nausea, upset stomach, motion sickness, or just a general "sick tummy" feeling. It works for a lot longer. If you buy a bottle of 550mg, 2 capsules usually helps your stomach feel better in 30 minutes or less. Repeat every 2 hours. We don't know how it works on children, so ask your doctor first.
UTI- Instead of drinking glass after glass of cranberry juice (yuck!), taking 1-2 420mg softgels of Cranberry Fruit every 4 hours will help clear most UTIs. If your UTI is severe, go see a doctor first. But at least you don't have deal with the taste and added sugar!
PMS- I can't take OTC medications for PMS so I have found 2 herbal supplements that help with the moodiness- Black Cohosh and St. John's Wort. Black Cohosh can also be used for menopausal hot flashes. St. John's Wort is mostly used for depression and anxiety. Twin takes it for her anxiety and it really does help calm her down! St. John's wort can cause many serious interactions with prescription drugs, so ask your doctor first.
Does your family use herbal remedies? What do you think of those that do use herbs instead of over-the-counter medicines?
I have never heard of the softgels for Cranberry Fruit. I will have to pass that info along to some family members that would most likely be very interested in that product .
ReplyDeleteMy family does not use too many herbal remedies although I have tried Ginger Root before. I am not opposed to them, I think I just have the tendency to reach for over the counter first.
Cool post! Funny I wrote a similar one a few months ago... 10 home remedies for everyday aches. For example, feverfew for migraines, or cloves for toothaches! Go check it out! :)
