Start 2013 on a happy "note"!

There are only a couple of days until 2012 turns into 2013. Some people dread a new year because the previous year was hard for them. No doubt that 2012 was probably one of the hardest years for my family. But instead of dreading what 2013 will bring, you can get excited! Here are some ways to start 2013 on a happy note and continuing to make 2013 a happy year:

Jot it down! On January 1st, I want you to take a jar (any jar will do) and write "Happy Thoughts" on the outside. Then take a sheet of paper and write down everything you are thankful for that day. Fold it up and put it in the jar. At the end of every week, I want you to make a list of positive and good things that happened during the week and put it in the jar. At the end of the year, take them out and reflect on the good things that happened instead of the bad.

Journal your way through 2013.  When things become too stressful or I have so much on my mind, I write it down. Believe it or not, I've been journaling since I've been out of high school and it helps me deal what my current emotions, instead of stressing out about them. It's a great release and a great way to clear your mind. If something is bothering you, grab a journal and write what's bothering you and why. Maybe you can figure out what to do about it.

Meditate. Stress is one of the main reasons people get sick. Meditation releases that stress to where you feel better about the situation. Even if you don't sit in the Lotus position (I never do!), just sitting straight while breathing in and out slowly will clear your mind enough to figure out solutions to the problem.

Celebrate the little things. Get a calendar and besides writing down anniversaries and birthdays, write down when your child gets an A in math or you finally walk that mile. Even if the celebration is pizza instead of tacos, it will release those "happy" feelings and you feel better about the day. Clean the kitchen by yourself? Celebrate with a piece of chocolate!

Even just by doing one of those listed above, you will increase your happiness just a little!

What are some ways you stay happy through out the year?

  1. These are all great ideas to start the new year on a good note! We can all use ways to help us become happier and more positive. I love the idea you mentioned about writing down a happy thought and putting it in a jar to read later. It is so easy to forget pleasant little things that happen to us during a day.
