Stay Well This Winter!

You're in the middle of doing laundry and it hits you- headache, sniffling nose, and fever. You're sick. It's hard to believe, but it is that time of the year where colds and the flu runs rampant through immune systems. I don't know about you but I at least get the cold once during the winter months. I get the flu about every other year. Sometimes you just can't prevent the cold or flu, but there are ways to shield yourself as best as you possibly can:

Pick up some hand sanitizer. I know it's cliche, but it truly works. Use it before you leave the house and when you get back. If you don't use it before you leave the house, you run the risk of catching the cold/flu germ and touching your face. When you use it before leaving home, you have fully cleansed your hands of bacteria, which is a breeding ground. If you don't use it when you get home, the germ will just stay on your hands until you touch something or your face.

Fortify yourself with fruits and vegetables. We all know that fruits and veggies contain lots of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. But with all that delicious food around, it's hard to concentrate on getting your 4-5 servings of fruits/vegetables a day. Instead of dreading it, consider cooking the fruit or vegetables into something you would definitely consider eating!

Take Echinacea daily. I know some people and studies don't believe Echinacea really works. This has been a debate that has been going on for YEARS. Each person has their own opinion and I have mine. I take Echinacea daily and have found (personally) that it actually works in shielding against colds. It doesn't completely keep you from catching a cold, but I have less colds now that I take it daily. Consult your doctor if you're unsure how your children, or even yourself, will react to it.

Clean what gets touched the most. No one will think you're weird if they come over to find you cleaning the doorknobs, phones, or other things your family touches the most. If done every day, you can keep the chance of getting sick down to about 25%. If your family hardly ever gets sick, then that number could be lower.

Take care of yourself- and your family. Taking great care of your family and yourself is one of the best ways to make sure that you don't get sick. Making sure everyone is getting the vitamins and nutrition they need will help them fight any cold or flu.

Get the flu shot! While it's not 100% effective on some people, it can help prevent you from getting the flu. It's effectiveness varies on the person getting the shot, but it still may provide some protection. To find out where the flu shot is available in your area, call your local health department and they may be able to help you.

How do you prevent you and your family from getting sick?

Get More Traffic For Your Blog!

If you want to increase your affiliate sales, what do you need?  More traffic.  You need to be consistently marketing and bringing more potential customers to your blog or website.  Easier said than done?   Here are some simple ways to increase your traffic.

Article marketing
Write up some articles about topics that your niche market will relate to.  Submit them to some of the bigger article directories, or to some related niche directories.

Guest Blogging
Find some blogs in your niche that accept guest blog posts and write for them.  The more popular the blog, the better.  To find them, do a Google search - type in "niche + guest blog" or "niche + write for us."

Don't forget about search engine optimization. A lot of people think this is just too hard so they don't bother with it.  Find a simple course that will teach you the basics of SEO, and optimize your website.  It basically boils down to using good keywords in the right places, and getting some good quality websites to link to yours.

Join some forums in your niche.  Become a "giver" by answering others' questions and offering some good information.  Get to know the other members and let them get to know you.  You will build some relationships by doing this, and can increase your sales through some gentle promotion.

Paid Advertising
This does have its place.  Although there are many free ways to bring in more traffic, you also may want to consider trying some paid advertising.  If you go this route, make sure you are advertising on a well-trafficked website/blog that attracts your target market.  Put your money to good use and choose wisely where you place your ads.

Social Networking
Is your target market on Facebook, Twitter, or Linkedin?   If so, befriend them, like their pages, follow them - whatever the appropriate term is, do it!  Start a group and invite them to join.

Getting more targeted traffic can all be summed up in one statement.  Hang out where your target market hangs out. Get to know them and let them get to know you.  Are they online?  Advertise and frequent where they are.  Are they offline?  Get flyers and ads up there.  Go where they are, get to know them, and let them get to know you.  You will see your sales increase as a result.

Looking for ideas on how to turn all that traffic into cash?
Consider joining Blogelina's Profitable Blogging Online Class and get 4 weeks of helpful info on monetizing your blog!

10 of my guilty pleasures!

When I am very stressed or it's a certain time (Don't make me say it!), I like to have things nearby that make me feel better at the moment, even if I feel guilty later. But I don't just have 1 or 2. I actually have 10 guilty pleasures that I like to have through out the year.

  1. Ice cream is my #1 guilty pleasure. Whether it's Rockslide Brownie by Blue Bell or just a Drumstick, ice cream is my mainstay for guilty pleasure.
  2. Dr Pepper is another major guilty pleasure. I don't drink soda often, but when I do, I prefer Dr Pepper. It can't be Coca Cola or Pepsi. It has to be a Dr Pepper.
  3. Naps are probably something that won't cause a major breakdown in society, but I love them. I can't sleep during the Summer because it's just too hot. But when it gets cooler, I have no problem falling asleep at 3 in the afternoon and accidentally sleeping until about 6.
  4. I know many women out there enjoy painting their nails once in a while. I, on the other hand, probably change my nail polish once a week. I only have about 10-15 bottles of nail polish, and I can't do designs, but even just a swipe of Liquid Sand by OPI just makes me feel better about my nails.
  5. I am ashamed to say that I am addicted to Pinterest. Sure, some of it is for blogging, but a lot of the times, I pin things I want to eventually get done. Maybe it never will, but it's nice to have it handy should I ever attempt it.
  6. Romance novels don't enter the house often, but when they do, I read them usually in a day. I haven't read 50 Shades of Grey. I prefer Harlequin.
  7. I love movies. I know I've at least seen You've Got Mail at least 50 times. No joke! So I will usually buy a movie with Movies on Demand about twice a month.
  8. I'm just as bad with music. My iPod (Yes, I still have an iPod) has probably about 4 days worth of songs I share with Twin. Is there a Music Anonymous group?
  9. I secretly dream of being caught up with technology. I've never owned a Smartphone nor an iPad. We did have a Kindle but it broke and we've never replaced it.
  10. I have a secret love affair with Cheetos.

What are some of your guilty pleasures!

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014!

As 2013 draws to a close, I thought it might be fitting to take a step back and look at how 2013 changed our lives forever.

If you remember, 2013 started with me in the hospital for 4 days with a staph infection and the flu. We should have known that it was an omen to how the year would turn out. Fast-forward a few months later, and my Dad lost his job in April. For about a month or so, we were without any income. We went to food banks and asked family and friends if they could help. Luckily, Dad found 2 jobs while I worked as hard as I could to earn what I could make for my family.

Sometime this past Summer, Mom ended up in the hospital. Even though they couldn't figure out what was wrong, it was then we all decided to start eating just a little better. In November, we started having car issues until the first week of December, our car died and we haven't gotten it fixed yet. We're waiting for a friend of a friend to come back and fix it. To be honest, we have no idea what could be wrong with it. We hope it is something minor.

Anyway, we grew super close as a family, and if we hadn't worked all of this out together, who knows where we would be now.

Since 2013 was such a very bad year for us, I have a feeling that 2014 will bring about bigger and more positive changes. In fact, I have a lot of things planned for 2014. Some of them do include Edge of Insanity, but a majority of them include taking care of myself, for once. I want to start school and get a degree in marketing. I would like to get healthier and eventually take up yoga. I want to quit smoking, and start eating more leafy green and less cheese. I want to have a relationship, because I truly believe I am ready, but that's at the basement of the list. One thing I would love to start doing is crafting more and maybe learn to make jewelry. I need a creative outlet that won't stress me out as much.

Before you think I've forgotten about you, don't worry- I have plenty of things in store for Edge of Insanity, including a way to give back to families all year long. I can't tell you what it is yet, but I can tell you that it might just inspire you to pay it forward.

If we work hard on it, we can make 2014 a year we will never forget!

What are your plans for 2014?

SweetTarts Popcorn Mix (Recipe)

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

With "the most wonderful time of the year" just behind us, moms were busy planning and purchasing the sweetest part of the holidays. Stockings were filled with candy and unique sweet treats that only moms have an eye for- and all within their budget! One thing that graced stockings was Nestle Seasonal Confections' newest holiday collection.

This year, Nestle offers something new for everyone on your list, including a large variety of fun and innovative items including the all new one-of-its-kind PIXY STIX Powder-Filled Candy canes, the larger-than-life Nestle Crunch 1lb. Candy Bar, and colorfully delicious Wonka and Chocolate Stocking Stuffer Tins.

Even though Christmas has come and gone, our family continues making and baking delicious treats to keep us in the wonderful holiday (Since New Years is a holiday, ya know!) spirit! So when I found out I would be getting to try Wonka Original Spree Candy Canes and a Nestle SweetTarts Stocking Stuffer Tin, I knew I wanted to try the SweetTarts in a recipe. The candy canes, unfortunately, did not make it into a photo. Before I had to chance, we had a slew of friends and family come over to help us decorate and work on the van. Since apparently I am friends with candy cane lovers, they pretty much munched on them all day long. I did have one, however, and they were delicious! It was like eating Spree in the shape of a candy cane. Weird, I know, but still yummy.

The recipe is a modified popcorn ball recipe. We either didn't have enough marshmallows or too much butter. So we decided to make it into a popcorn mix instead of popcorn balls. It was a big hit among everyone.

SweetTarts Popcorn Mix

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes (or more, depending on your microwave)
Total time: 15 minutes, plus 12 hours for set time
  • 1 1/2 cup SweetTarts candy, chopped
  • 2 bags popped popcorn (plain)
  • 1/2 lb mini-marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup (or vanilla extract)
Cooking Directions
  1. Pop 2 bags of popcorn and pour bags into a large bowl.
  2. Melt the butter in a microwaveable bowl. Add the marshmallows and stir frequently until they fully melt. Add maple syrup and stir until it is completely mixed in.
  3. Drizzle butter/marshmallow/syrup mix into bowl over popcorn. Let it stand for a few seconds. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of chopped Nestle SweetTarts candies over popcorn
  4. Mix with your hands or a spatula until the popcorn is completely covered and candy is mixed in.
  5. Pour popcorn into a pan lined with parchment or wax paper. Flatten popcorn (but not hard enough to crush it. Otherwise, what would be the point?), making sure it is even.
  6. Put pan into the fridge overnight to set. Take pan out after at least 12 hours and break into pieces or put into festive bags!
How you want to enjoy it is your choice but it tastes really good while sipping a mug of hot chocolate!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Sore Throat Tips from the Doctor!

Thanks to Dr. Dan Hussar, I was able to get some great tips for those sore throats!

1. Suck on Lozenges and Use Sprays- If it has been determined that you're sore throat is due to a viral infection, antibiotics won't help it. But non-prescription products like Chloraseptic Lozenges and Sprays help numb the pain and discomfort.

2. Gurgle With Saltwater- If your throat hurts when you swallow, gurgle with saltwater. Mix 1 teaspoon of table salt with a full glass of water. Repeat every hour.

3. Increasing Fluid Intake- Increasing the amount of liquids, such as tea and other fluids, will help you hydrate your throat and body.

4. Ask Your Pharmacist/Seek Medical Attention- Discuss your symptoms with your Pharmacist and ask for his/her recommendations. If your sore throat is severe, accompanied by a fever, or lasts more than several days, contact your doctor's office.

5. Open Clogged Nasal Passages-Part of the reason you may end up breathing through your mouth is a stuffy nose. Using an over-the-counter nasal decongestant will help open your nasal passages.

6, Pain Relievers- If your sore throat pain persists, a nonprescription pain reliever such as Acetaminophen will reduce or eliminate discomfort.

7. Humidify the Room- If you awaken to a sore throat, it may have been caused by sleeping with your mouth open. Ordinarily, your nose moistens, air headed for your throat and lungs. Breathing through your mouth bypasses that step, which leaves your throat parched and irritated. Keeping a bedside humidifier in your room can decrease the chances of waking up with a sore throat.

8. Get a Head of Steam-In addition to using a humidifier in your bedroom, it is helpful to inhale steam. This can be done with a hot shower, but be careful not to burn yourself, or by running hot water in your sink and draping a towel over your head while leaning into the steamy basin. Inhale deeply through your nose & mouth for 5-10 minutes and repeat several times a day.

9. Rise to the Occasion- Another cause of sore throats in the morning, which is often forgotten about, is cause by the backup of stomach acid (EW!) into the throat during the night. The acid can be irritating to the tissues of the throat. You can fix this problem by increasing the tilt of your bed frame so that the head is 4-6 inches higher than the foot of your bed. Another deterrent would be to avoid eating or drinking an hour or two before sleeping.

10. Toss Your Toothbrush- If you are currently or recently have been sick, or have had the same toothbrush for a while, replace your toothbrush. Bacteria and other germs collect on the bristles and can invade your body through your gums while brushing. Another good preventive measure is to keep your toothbrush stored elsewhere outside the bacteria-prone bathroom.

Dr. Dan Hussar is a Remington Professor of Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Pharmacists Association and is a Past President of the Drug Information Association and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association.

#OriginalSprout offers worry-free luxury for your and your family!

I was NOT compensated for this review. I received the products mentioned below FREE to review. All thoughts/opinions are my own.
When it comes to body and hair care products out on the market nowadays, a lot of them have harsh chemicals that aren't only bad for you, they could be bad for babies and children! It is a scary thing to think about, isn't it?

Original Sprout offers many different products ranging from body wash (for kids and adults alike), shampoo, and too many others to name that don't have all of those harmful chemicals. They even have a a Curl Calmer for those out-of control, poofy curls.

Cradle Cap can make any parent worry. The entire Original Sprout line of shampoos, conditioners, styling products and lotions was designed with sensitive skin in mind. They even offer a Cradle Cap Comb for that sensitive area.

The good thing about Original Sprout is that their products are really worry free! Not only are they eco-friendly, they are honey free, and free from other harmful ingredients such as formaldehyde, Propylene Glycol, and completely natural. Also, it is 100% Vegan. It is safer for you and your family.

Need more convincing Original Sprout is the way to go? Some celebrities like the McDermott/Spelling family and Brooke Shields use Original Sprout!

Right now, they currently have an Original Sprout Holiday Gift Set that is perfect for the person on your gift list.

You can follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Prices vary depending on sizes (including travel sizes)

I've been looking for an eco-friendly AND sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner that won't leave my locks feeling frizzy or dried out. But I hate the chemicals in traditional haircare because my hair is so sensitive. So when I found out I would be trying Original Sprout, I knew I wanted to try their new line of Tahitian Family Collection! I had the chance to try the Island Bliss Shampoo, Luscious Island Conditioner, and Original Sprout's Miracle Detanger.

Island Bliss Shampoo- It was a little on the thin side, which I guess accounted for it's lack of a rich lather. U will say that it did smell good and got my hair super clean. Plus it was a breeze to wash out- no left over residue!

Luscious Island Conditioner- It was thicker than the shampoo, and went on smoothly. It wasn't heavy on my hair at all. It rinsed off just as easily. Here is what I absolutely love about it- it left my hair feeling light! Most other conditioners made my hair feel heavy, even after rinsing. Loved the feeling!
Miracle Detangler- Call me dopey if you want, but for 5 minutes, I couldn't figure out how to get the damn thing to spray. I thought I had broken it. Nope- there is actually a trigger on-off toggle for it! Press left to keep you from spraying it or turn it right to allow you to continue spraying. Great idea if you have kids. But since I have tangles after every shower, I wanted a detangler that wasn't filled with chemicals but got the job done. It worked wonderfully, even detangling the worst of my tangles. It wasn't greasy, and I even noticed some shine to my just-dried hair.

It is days later and my hair still feels great! No yucky residue and my hair is still light and airy. Yep- Original Sprout is true to their word!

Why Christmas is different this year...

Let me start off by saying that Christmas this year didn't exactly turned out as our family had planned. We have more gifts this year (thanks solely to Swagbucks and wins) but because they had cut back where Dad works, money is still super tight. Even the candy in the stockings were bought with a Walgreens gift card I had won. We plan on heading over to my grandmother's house on Christmas Eve for good fun, family, and fun!

Usually every year, we get out a couple of nights during the month and drive around town to look at all the lights. It didn't even happen this year. We are having major car issues and we can't figure out what the problem is. So we don't end up stranded on a dark street somewhere, we have decided to forgo that tradition as well. Instead, we put up lights outside to enjoy!

It may seem depressing that we can't do that traditions we usually do, or even bake what we wanted. But instead of focusing on what we can't do or have, I have decided to focus on that at least we still have each other. We may not be having the Christmas many people are having (fridges full of food and treats- like I said, money is tight), we are enjoying the season with fun Christmas movies and making Star Wars snowflakes.

I hope next year is better (It has to be, right?), and that we can make Christmas as big or small as we want it!

Star Wars Snowflakes

Scout Trooper
Since we have Star Wars fans in the family (Twin & Dad), it seemed fitting to cut out some Star Wars snowflakes. Templates can be found here.

We don't own an Exacto knife yet, so we all had to choose a template that was easy to cut with cross-stitch scissors and regular scissors. I chose Scout Trooper (which Twin informed me was different from a Storm Trooper), Mom chose Imperial Royal Guard, and Twin had originally chosen the Ewok.
Imperial Royal Guard by Mom
Mom finished her Imperial Royal Guard first, and I had finished my Scout Trooper next (minus a few lines I had missed on his helmet). Twin tried to cut the Ewok but without an Exacto knife, ears were cut in half and the little pieces seemed impossible. So she pretty much trashed that and printed out Darth Vader. It came out much better!
Twin's Darth Vader
If you are wanting to attempt this yourself, I suggest cutting it as you watch the tutorial video. It will definitely save a lot of time and confusion. We aren't completely sure if we want to hang them on the tree or in a window. What do you think?

What to expect in 2014!

I know it is weird to be talking about 2014 when I haven't even made a Christmas tradition post! But I just wanted to give everyone a head's up because we are making big changes to Edge of Insanity!

Starting January 1st on all new giveaways, all mandatory comments must be 1-2 sentences long. Google thinks that comments with only 1 or 2 words are spam, and sometimes aren't even posted. So if you posted a comment for a giveaway and don't see it once a few days had passed, Google most likely deleted it and I didn't even see it.

We will also be featuring a weekly reader question. Every week, a reader (That's you!) can submit a question about anything and we will let other readers answer the question! So let's assume someone submits a question about food substitutions. Others can chime in on what they use in place of onions, garlic, etc. If your question was chosen that week, we'll e-mail to let you know.

We'll try to feature more recipe, DIY, and craft posts. We're working on recipes right now for rice krispy treats and popcorns balls. As soon as it is made and the recipes perfected, we will post them.

A lot of you have mentioned that the blog is sort of hard to navigate. While we love the look of Edge of Insanity, we will install a few things to make it more easier for you to go through the pages and posts. You may have noticed a few new things right now!

We are also going to work on non-sponsored giveaways. That was my plan this year, but because my father lost his job, we had to tighten the budget to just essentials. But I plan on 2014 being a much better year where I can finally do my own giveaways. What is something you would like to see?

While we will still post deals, ways to save money, reviews, and giveaways (like we have always done), these changes are meant to cater to our beautiful readers and make your stay at Edge of Insanity an exciting one!

Which change do you like the most?

Are group giveaways worth it?

Every time you turn around, you see tons of blogs holding the same giveaway for the same prize. But is participating in one truly worth the traffic? Yes and no, but it isn't as complicated as it sounds.

When you participate in a group giveaway, you can gain quite a bit of traffic, but it is only temporary. Once the giveaway ends, you lose that traffic and maybe even some followers on Facebook and Twitter. Some entrants only like a Facebook page or follow someone on Twitter just to get that entry. Unless they truly enjoy your blog, don't expect some of those likes or follows to stay where they are.

When I first started Edge of Insanity, I noticed there weren't a lot of group giveaways. There might be one or two in a blue moon but there prizes had a big value that didn't require bloggers who signed up to pay to participate. It wasn't about incentive either. We just wanted to give our readers the chance to win an awesome prize. But nowadays, everything has been turned into a group giveaway, including prizes with an ARV of $15. If you want to create a group giveaway, make sure the prize is worth the 200 extra entries. Instead of saying, "Yes! Sign me up!', why not contact the company and ask to review the item instead?

Speaking of extra entries, having more than 10 can make the entrant bored. Eventually that entrant will just stop entering those specific giveaways. I hardly ever participate or even enter group giveaways because it just seemed so overwhelming. If I do enter one, I only submit the entries where I know I like a Facebook page or follow someone on Twitter.

Lastly, we turn to how you are viewed as a blogger. If all you do is participate in group giveaways without any strong content, brands who are wanting a long partnership might skip over your blog. Sure, brands want their name noticed over the blogsphere. I am not denying that. But they are usually looking for a well-respected blogger that posts regularly so that their product stands out. Not to mention that continuous group giveaways on your blog is a great way to lose faithful readers. I learned that lesson the hard way.

I haven't done a group giveaway in months because to me, it wasn't worth the time and effort. When I have other giveaways, reviews, and posts to promote, worrying about a group giveaway was usually at the the bottom of the list. I probably won't do group giveaways anymore.

If you want to participate in a group giveaway, that is completely up to you. But for bloggers that are trying to create a blog with quality content and steady following, group giveaways usually are not worth it.

Want a more in-depth look at group giveaways? There is this fascinating post at WiC Project that includes the pros and cons of each type of group giveaway.

"You must feel lonely!"- Wait. What?

The other day, I was commenting on a status update on Facebook about being single at Christmas when someone replied with "You must feel lonely". Wait a minute. When did being single at the Holidays suddenly become about feeling lonely? Last time I checked, I can't ever recall feeling lonely at Christmas. I spend it with my loved ones, so I am hardly ever alone. But there are also some perks about not being attached during Christmas:
  1. I don't have to share my chocolate.
  2. One less gift to buy.
  3. Plenty of people to mingle (and flirt) with at parties.
  4. Can you say sweat pants on Christmas morning?
  5. No arguments over where to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  6. I can laugh or even drool over the half-naked guys in the Show Your Joe Boxer K-Mart commercial without feeling like I'm cheating.
  7. Last, but certainly not least, my adult Christmas wishlist can include Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead)!
I may be single yet again this Christmas, but that's is okay. I have my family (and yummy treats) to keep me warm!
